Commodity Coffee

In the 14th century, Arabs first roasted the coffee bean, which originally came from Ethiopia, and brewed coffee from it. In the following centuries, coffee has become an important international commodity. Initially accessible only to a small class, coffee has now become a part of modern social life. Two major coffee varieties are grown worldwide, the milder Arabica beans, which are grown predominantly in the Western Hemisphere, and the stronger Robusta beans, which grow in the hot plains of Asia and Africa. The NYBOT Coffee Future refers to Arabica coffee. Coffee prices react very quickly to political conflicts and, above all, to climatic fluctuations in the growing countries, as even minor storms can lead to significant crop losses.
