Commodity Corn

The word corn – originally “Mays” – comes from the language of the Mayans, who apparently named themselves after this grain. The first fields of corn were cultivated in Spain as early as 1525, after Columbus discovered the plant in Central America and brought it to Europe. Today, corn is grown worldwide and is a staple food in many countries. In Europe and North America, it is an important livestock feed, as ensiling of corn plants, i.e. storage, makes it possible to stockpile for livestock farming. Over the past decade, production of ethanol from corn has exploded in the United States. Today, over 50% of the corn crop is processed into ethanol.
